Epilepsy First Aid Course

Lesson 2.7

Triggers and Risk Factors

Seizure triggers vary from person to person. Not everyone with epilepsy has identifiable triggers.

Common triggers may include

  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Missed medication
  • Illness or fever
  • Alcohol or substance use
  • Flashing lights for some individuals

Remember

  • Triggers are individual
  • What affects one person may not affect another
  • Avoid making assumptions about what caused a seizure
