The Stages of a Seizure

Understanding these stages can help first aiders respond calmly and appropriately.

  1. Prodromal Stage
Subtle changes in mood, behaviour, or physical feelings that may occur hours or days before a seizure.
  2. Aura
A brief warning sensation that occurs immediately before some seizures.
This may include unusual smells, tastes, feelings, or visual changes.
  3. Ictal Stage
    The seizure itself.
This is when visible symptoms occur, such as changes in movement, awareness, or behaviour.
  4. Post-Ictal Stage
The recovery period after the seizure.
The person may feel confused, tired, emotional, or need to rest.
