Different Types of Seizures

Seizures vary in appearance and duration. First aid response depends on the seizure type.

Tonic-Clonic Seizures

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Body stiffens, then jerking movements occur
  • May involve loss of bladder control
  • Usually followed by confusion or tiredness

Focal Seizures

  • May affect awareness or remain fully aware
  • Unusual movements, sensations or behaviours
  • A person may appear confused or distracted

Absence Seizures

  • Brief loss of awareness
  • Staring into space
  • Lasts only a few seconds
  • Often mistaken for daydreaming
