The Stages of a Seizure
Understanding these stages can help first aiders respond calmly and appropriately.
- Prodromal Stage
Subtle changes in mood, behaviour, or physical feelings that may occur hours or days before a seizure. - Aura
A brief warning sensation that occurs immediately before some seizures.
This may include unusual smells, tastes, feelings, or visual changes. - Ictal Stage
The seizure itself.
This is when visible symptoms occur, such as changes in movement, awareness, or behaviour. - Post-Ictal Stage
The recovery period after the seizure.
The person may feel confused, tired, emotional, or need to rest.
