The Recovery Position: Step-by-Step

After a seizure has stopped, the person may be unconscious or very drowsy. Placing them in the recovery position helps keep their airway clear and allows saliva or vomit to drain safely.

  1. Kneel beside the person and check that they are breathing normally
  2. Gently roll them onto their side
  3. Tilt the head slightly back to keep the airway open
  4. Bend the top leg and support the head to keep them stable

Note:

Stay with the person until they are fully awake and aware.
If breathing becomes difficult or you are concerned about their condition, call 999.
