What is a Seizure?

A seizure is a sudden burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. This temporary disruption affects how the brain communicates with the body and may change how a person:

  • Moves
  • Thinks
  • Feels
  • Behaves
  • Experiences awareness

Seizures can last from a few seconds to several minutes and may vary in severity. Some seizures are very noticeable, while others may appear subtle and easily missed. Not all seizures involve convulsions or loss of consciousness.

Note:

A seizure is a symptom
Epilepsy is a condition
