Recognizing the Signs of a Seizure

Not all seizures involve shaking (sometimes called convulsions). Seizures can look different depending on the person and seizure type. If you’re unsure, treat it as a seizure and focus on keeping the person safe.

Confusion

The person may appear confused, disoriented, frightened or overwhelmed.

Shaking or Falling

Some seizures may cause sudden shaking or cause the person to fall to the ground.

Repetitive Movements

Some seizures cause repeated movements such as lip smacking, chewing, or hand motions.

Unresponsive Staring

The person may stare blankly and not respond when spoken to.

Wandering Behaviour

They may walk around aimlessly or behave in a way that seems unusual.

Jerks & Twitches

Some seizures involve sudden jerking, twitches or trembling movements.
