Practical Scenario 2

Focal Seizure in a Public Setting

You are in a public place when you notice a person behaving unusually. They appear confused and are making repetitive hand movements. They are not responding clearly when spoken to and seem disoriented. They do not fall or have convulsions.

Consider:

  • What type of seizure might this be?
  • Does every seizure involve convulsions?
  • Should you assume the person is intoxicated?
  • What is the safest approach?

Take a moment to think through your response before reading on.

Correct First Aid Response

  • Stay calm
  • Gently guide the person away from danger if needed
  • Speak calmly and clearly
  • Do not restrain them unless they are at immediate risk
  • Stay with them until they regain awareness

Call 999 if:

The seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes
They do not regain awareness
They are injured
