Lesson 4.3 - Practical Scenario 2

Focal Seizure in a Public Setting

Scenario

You are in a public place when you notice a person behaving unusually. They appear confused and are making repetitive hand movements. They are not responding clearly when spoken to and seem disoriented. They do not fall or have convulsions.

Consider

  • What type of seizure might this be?
  • Does every seizure involve convulsions?
  • Should you assume the person is intoxicated?
  • What is the safest approach?

Correct first aid response

01Stay calm

Remain calm and observe what is happening.

02Guide away from danger

Gently guide the person away from danger if needed.

03Speak clearly

Use calm, simple language and avoid crowding them.

04Stay with them

Stay with them until they regain awareness and are safe.

Call 999 if:

  • The seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes
  • They do not regain awareness
  • They are injured
  • You are concerned for their safety
